SYMBOLYSM

The Asmat iconography, as elsewhere, is deeply connected with the sorrounding environment and in this case is imbued with the animistic belief that lies at the basis of their daily life, today as in the past.
The anthropomorphic and animal figures, rendered in what appears as the “classical” Asmat form, represent the spirits that permeate their universe.
The emblems of strength and courage engraved on the shields are not merely decorations but an essential part of it, not only as a weapon for defense but also as a psychological tool to terrify the enemy with the evidence of a powerful mana originating from the ancestors, so strong that it overcomes the opponents and forces them to a retreat.
The spirits of the ancestors and of the totemic animals, reproduced in a symbolic form on the bisj, statues and soul canoes, incite to a “dignity” of manner, as a means protection for the living or a viaticum for the deceased.
