Very few people in the world know the Asmat and relate them to the population that lives in Papua New Guinea and created the fascinating art and culture presented on this site.
In the indigenous language, the word Asmat-ow means “us”, “the real people” , to differentiate themselves from the rest of the world. The Asmat reclaim and assert their own originality, born from a numbers of territorial and historical conditions which are very peculiar and interesting.
