Our passion for Papua and for the history of this land which now belongs also to us, in some measure, has developed into a strong dedication to Asmat art.

We had the opportunity to collect significant masterpieces dating between the end of the 1950's and mid 1990's. We are happy to offer an overview of these works of art to keen collectors, museums, institutions and all those who appreciate the handiwork of these distant, yet vibrant spirits.

Our ultimate aim is to support the construction and management of a school for young carvers in Papua, together with the Mission in Agats, so as to preserve their preserve and develop their art anad carving skills.

MARIANGELA FARDELLA

Mariangela Fardella lived the first part of her life in Indonesia, where her father as an engineer had started working on his own at the beginning of the 1950's. She lived there through the troubled years of Suharto's military coup d'état, after which she moved to Italy to terminate her studies. But her life is a continuous commuting to Indonesia, where she returns often to stay with a part of her family.

Knowledgeable in Indonesian culture and language, she has a great interest in art and traditional handiwork.

GIORGIO AZZAROLI

Giorgio Azzaroli pursues, through extensive travelling, his interest in anthropology, born during his university studies. After Maghreb, the Middle East and India, his acquaintance with Mariangela induced him to go East and visit Indochina and Indonesia. His concern and curiosity for the so-called "primitive" cultures carries him, with the support of his companion, to the Borneo and West Papua rainforest.. Captivated by the Dani (who live on the steep central highlands of West Papua) and the Asmat (inhabitants of the vast swampland in the South), he returned there for seven times and intensified the contact with the local populations, whose situation is largely going unnoticed.
